Treatability Testing

What is it?

Treatability testing is a service that allows ETS to help clients determine the suitability of a process or processes for treatment of wastes and provides design data for specification and design of a full-scale system. ETS provides laboratory, bench, and pilot-scale treatability testing services to help clients find the best solution to their waste treatment needs. Testing needs for a particular wastewater can vary depending on experience, so some systems require no testing at all while others require full pilot scale testing. ETS engineers can work with clients to determine which testing best suits the client's needs. Of course, A full range of lab analyses can be conducted on samples, depending on the client's specific requirements.

Laboratory Scale Testing

Laboratory scale testing is the simplest and lowest-cost form of testing. Lab scale testing typically consists of one or more batch tests performed on small samples to get a "go or no go" determination of whether a particular process is worth further investigation for a given sample. A wide variety of processes can be tested by ETS engineers, including dissolved air flotation (DAF), coagulation and flocculation, filtration (including Flex Tube Filters), aerobic treatment, and anaerobic treatment. All testing is conducted at ETS labs.

Bench Scale Testing

Bench scale testing is often the "next step" in design after lab scale testing. Bench scale tests are usually continuous tests, designed to achieve a pseudo-steady state over time. These tests enable ETS engineers to evaluate time-dependent variables, such as biological acclimation and cumulative biological toxicity. Multiple samples are usually required over the duration of the testing. Bench scale testing can be performed for processes which require longer-term steady-state operation to obtain design data, such as aerobic and anaerobic biological treatment. Bench scale testing can be performed in ETS labs or at the client's site.

Pilot Scale Testing

Pilot scale testing is the largest-scale type of testing. Pilot testing is performed at the client's site, using wastewater as it is actually generated at the plant to provide the most accurate testing. Samples are taken throughout the testing period, and test parameters are varied to obtain as much quality design data as possible. These design data can then be used as the basis for a full-scale design. ETS maintains several pilot-scale testing systems, including DAF, Flex Tube Filter, SBR, and anaerobic systems. These systems can be mobilized within 2 weeks to provide for quick testing capability.
